The University of Connecticut Police Department sponsors an annual Citizen Police Academy during the fall academic semester. The academy is held for approximately ten weeks (September - November from 6:00 PM—9:00 PM on Wednesday nights) and aims to improve understanding and communication between the police department and the community through education. UConn students, staff, faculty, and Town of Mansfield residents are eligible to enroll. The instructors for the academy are Police Officers who specialize in the field in which they instruct. Several courses consist of practical, hands-on training. A ride-a-long with a UConn Police Officer while on duty is available during the program. Some topics discussed include motor vehicle law, DUI law, narcotics, patrol procedures, K-9 demonstration, criminal investigation, community outreach, use of force, and firearms safety.
